FAQ for ISK

Is ISK the right choice for my child?
Families will be invited to a meeting to discuss expectations. To express interest and book a pre-enrolment meeting, check the front page. Most spots will be reserved for families living in Denmark for work purposes, as required by KIG Law.

How do I enrol my child?
Email isk@kalundborg.dk to express your interest.

Are there language requirements?
No, ISK is open to all, regardless of language skills. However, participation may be challenging without Danish or English proficiency. Discuss your child’s needs with the school for guidance.

Is the school open to Danish students?
Yes, it is. However, according to the KIG law, the majority of spaces must be reserved for international families who are living in Denmark for work purposes. Any remaining spaces may be offered to families who already live in Kalundborg Municipality and the surrounding areas.

How much does it cost to attend ISK?
The school program is completely free of charge.

Does the school offer many extracurricular activities?
International School Kalundborg (ISK) will coordinate its after-school care (SFO) program with the nearby Herredsåsen School. The SFO is where most Danish children spend time after school to foster community and integration, which strengthens their sense of belonging and well-being.

Is there transportation to the school?
ISK does not have a school bus but refers to public transportation. This is very common in Denmark, which has a strong public transport system.
Bus passes are issued to all students in grades 0-3 who live more than 2.5 kilometers from school.
Bus passes are issued to all students in grades 4-6 who live more than 6 kilometers from school.
Bus passes are issued to all students in grades 7-9 who live more than 7 kilometers from school.
At afstand.dk you can see if your child qualifies for a bus pass. You should contact the school if you wish to order a school bus pass for your child. If you have questions about unsafe routes, transport due to illness, etc., you should also contact the school.

Is there parking at the school?
Yes.

Do students have to wear a uniform?
No, we do not have a school uniform at ISK. Danish public schools typically do not have uniforms.

Is there a cafeteria service?
Yes, the school has a paid cafeteria service. However, most students usually bring a healthy packed lunch from home.

Is AULA used at International School Kalundborg (ISK)?
Yes, AULA is the primary communication channel between parents and the school. And once your child becomes a student we will assist you in getting set up on Aula.

How are children with special needs supported?
Like other public schools, students at ISK have the opportunity to receive special support. We work with PPRC and involve psychologists and other relevant professionals based on each child’s needs.

How do you support students with dyslexia?
We involve relevant specialists and create an individual plan for each child.

What are mixed-age classes?
We will combine students across year groups during the initial phase until we have enough students to separate classes. The class will receive differentiated instruction, with the teacher considering each student’s academic, social level, and language skills.

Will my child take the Danish school-leaving exam?
Yes, according to the KIG law, an international public school concludes with the Danish school-leaving examination (FSA).

Can my child continue to an international upper secondary education?
Yes, after completing the school-leaving exam at ISK in Year 9, students can apply to, for example, a pre-IB program.

How is physical education conducted?
We use local facilities, and all children are taught together regardless of gender. Changing and showering are part of the physical education program.

How is religion taught?
Like other Danish public schools, we teach religion. Students are introduced to fundamental concepts in Christianity and also learn about other religions.
