BYOD – Bring Your Own Device
BYOD stands for “Bring Your Own Device.”
Kalundborg Municipality recommends that students bring their own IT equipment (BYOD), but it is not a requirement.
BYOD allows students to use the IT equipment they are most comfortable with.
Students who are unable to bring their own IT equipment will be provided with suitable devices by the school during lesson time. It is the school’s responsibility to ensure that the equipment provided is up-to-date and functional.
Who is responsible if IT equipment is damaged at school?
Compensation – Student’s Own Equipment (BYOD)
- If a student’s personal device is stolen at school, the school is generally not liable. It is the parents’ insurance that must cover the loss.
- If the student damages their own device, the parents’ insurance must cover the damage.
- If another student damages the device, it is a matter between the involved parties. Typically, the other student’s parents’ insurance must cover the damage.
- If school staff damage the device, the school’s insurance will cover the damage.
Parents are encouraged to check the extent of their insurance coverage for IT equipment – for example, if the child drops the device. Some damages may require extended coverage, such as electronics insurance.
However, coverage is only available if the parents have taken out a household insurance policy. If they have not, this does not change the fact that the school is not obligated to cover the damage.
If an insurance company determines that the damage is not covered, this also does not change the fact that the school is not liable.
Compensation – School’s Equipment
If the equipment provided by the school is damaged, the school or the school’s insurance will cover the cost.
If a student intentionally damages school equipment, general Danish liability rules apply. The student may be held responsible, and the parents’ insurance must cover the damage.
Legal Framework
All damages are handled according to general Danish liability law.
